Complementary Medicine And Heavy Metal Toxicity In Australia

چکیده

In recent years, heavy metal toxicity related to the use of traditional Chinese and Indian herbal medications has been reported in a number of countries, including Australia. Heavy metals such as lead or mercury may be introduced into herbal medications through contaminated soil or production techniques, or may be deliberately included as a therapeutic ingredient. Particularly when consumed over prolonged periods, heavy metals have been detected in some products at levels sufficient to cause significant toxicity. Currently, these medications may be imported for personal use without licence or testing, and there is continued risk that Australians may develop heavy metal toxicity through their use. This article will review heavy metal toxicity related to herbal preparations, and argue that the current regulatory framework could be strengthened through the use of targeted public educational campaigns and the provision of free heavy metal testing for imported medications.

Metal-Induced Oxidative Stress and Cellular Signaling Alteration in Animals

Contamination by heavy metals has attracted increasing attention considering the ability of these elements in producing serious consequence to ecosystem, and especially on animals health. Due to their widespread use in human activities such as industry, agriculture and even as medicine (e.g. arsenic, selenium and platinum), numerous health risks may be associated with exposure to these substanc...

Protective role of exogenous SNP against heavy metal toxicity in Brassica oleracea (var. Capitata) Narsingh Bahadur Singh*, Himani Singh and Sunaina

The present study is focused on the importance of SNP, a NO donor, as Cd stress modulator on seedlings of cabbage. The exogenously applied Cd induced stress in cabbage seedlings to explore the protective role of SNP. 21-day-old seedlings were grown in Hoagland solution and Cd at 0.5 and 0.7 mM concentration with and without SNP. The biophysical and biochemical parameters were analyzed. Cd exhib...

Heavy metal toxicity: Effect on plant growth, biochemical parameters and metal accumulation by Brassica juncea L.

Plant growth, pigment concentration, biochemical parameters and uptake of heavy metals were determined for Brassica juncea L. in response to cadmium and lead stress. The plant exhibited a decline in growth, chlorophyll content and carotenoids with Cd and Pb but Cd was found to be more detrimental than Pb treatment in B. juncea. The protein content was decreased by Cd (900 μM) to 95% and 44% by ...

Heavy metal bioaccumulation and its potential relation with incidence of Canine Parvovirus infection in Golden Jackals, North Iran

BACKGROUNDS: Heavy metal toxicity has confirmed to be a critical threat to animals’ health. It has been proved that heavy metals can cause immunosuppression. Although, it is said that damage of immune function plays a contributing role in the increasing incidence of infectious diseases. The increasing use of rural habitats by jackals make them suitable to monitor the impact of anthropogenic on ...

Acute Toxicity of a Heavy Metal Cadmium to an Anuran, the Indian Skipper Frog Rana cyanophlyctis

Background: There has been increasing awareness throughout the world regarding the remarkable decrease in amphibian population. For such amphibian population decline several causes have been given. Cadmium, a heavy metal is released both from natural sources (leaching of cadmium rich soils) and anthropogenic activities to the aquatic and terrestrial environments. This study evaluated the toxici...
